The Relationship Between the Marian Fathers and the Marian Missionaries

Because people often ask what the relationship is between the Marian Fathers of the Immaculate Conception and the Marian Missionaries of Divine Mercy, leadership of both organizations have approved the following response.

The Marian Missionaries of Divine Mercy and the Marian Fathers of the Immaculate Conception are separate 501(c)3 organizations. Therefore, donations to the Marian Fathers do not go directly to support the Marian Missionaries or vice versa.

Still, the Marian Fathers and the Marian Missionaries have a special relationship, particularly regarding their service of Christ and the Church. For instance, leadership in the Marian Fathers has encouraged some of the members of the Congregation in giving pastoral support to the Marian Missionaries because that leadership recognizes how the Marian Missionaries organization faithfully and effectively promotes the Marian Fathers’ charism. For example, Fr. Michael Gaitley, MIC, is the Director of Evangelization for the Marian Fathers in the United States, but he was also appointed to be Director of Formation for the Marian Missionaries. With the encouragement and blessing of his Superior General and the permission and counsel of his Provincial Superior, Fr. Gaitley has helped to found and assists in the direction of the Marian Missionaries organization as a way of bringing the Divine Mercy and Marian charism and spirituality of the Marian Fathers to others, especially to laypeople. Also, in his role as the Director of Evangelization for the Marian Fathers, Fr. Gaitley recognizes that the Marian Missionaries are an effective and efficient way of advancing the evangelization goals of the Marian Fathers as well as of fostering vocations to the priesthood and consecrated life.

So, while the Marian Missionaries are not officially an apostolate of the Marian Fathers at this time, they have the Congregation’s aforementioned pastoral and moral support as well as a declaration from representatives of the entire U.S. Province gathered at its last chapter, a declaration that includes the following words: “The 2017 Provincial Chapter strongly affirms the great work of the Marian Missionaries of Divine Mercy.”
